“Tonight on highway 1 I saw the sunset over Malibu
I see the sky, the stars, the lights, and I always think of you.”
Hollywood's everything you want to be-- it's all you want to breathe and see and smell, isn't it? Don't be shy-- admit it and take those first few daring steps into the realm of fame. If you make it, imagine: people will worship or envy you and you'll be the talk of the town. You'll get to go to the hottest parties and meet with the most tantalizing of stars, and it will all seem too good to be true, like a neverending dream.
It's in Malibu, California, where the true stars reside. The idea of perfect sunsets over the golden sandy beaches appeals to anyone and everyone. If you are lucky enough, you might just get to brush elbows with the rich and famous, or even become one of them. A-list actors, musicians, journalists and more flock to Malibu as an escape from the wild L.A. streets. Yet, Malibu isn’t much better. The drama is real, the parties are wild, and the people are beautiful. If maybe you aren’t suited for the a-list Hollywood life style, you will learn to get along with those b-list stars. You'll hope for fame but feel trapped by working on hardcore indie films, or maybe you'll resort to writing to try and get by. But it’s not just all actors down here in California. There are the athletes, the models, the musicians, and don’t forget the paparazzi. That’s one sacrifice that you will never get used to, that will never feel worth it: having your life documented for the world to see. Will you be able to handle it?
Once you're sucked into this world of glitz and glamour, maybe you'll realize something's wrong, that something's hiding beneath the surface. You don't know who you are anymore, and you don't know who to trust. In a moment anyone could turn their back on you and sell photos of you to the press, or maybe they'll tell the Inquirer your darkest secret. Love and fame come hand in hand, and you don't know if you're being used to advance a person's career or not. Your weight is constantly criticized, and so are your choices in clothes and cars. Maybe you're jet-setting everywhere like you dreamed, but you're leaving your lover behind and your heart hurts every time you have to leave. You just want to escape and get away from all of these things, but you can't. You're here for your fifteen minutes of fame, and maybe that popularity will fade sooner than you want it to, and then no one will give a crap about you and you'll be all alone, because that's Hollywood.
In the end, you just might realize that fame wasn't what you thought it would be. It's simply too late; you're trapped in the camera's flash and you can't escape. But don't you realize? Everyone in Malibu has stars in their eyes.
