it's all so perfect behind the white picket fence, isn't it? known as much for its only-in-L.A. pricetags as it is for its paparazzi-lined front patio, this iconic cottage is the quintessential see and be seen spot in la-la land. unlike the super-sleek loungey look of other power dining spots, the interior here is shabby chic and cluttered to the max: peeling furniture, faded chintz, old paintings, enormous bouquets of fresh flowers and tables packed so closely together it's almost a requirement to weigh less than 100 pounds. celebrity sightings are par for the course and the menu is traditional american, with comfort classics like piled-high cobb salad, mesquite-grilled cajun prime rib, fried chicken and flaky white fish. and don't forget the famed gimlet--ordering it here is almost compulsory.

HARD ROCK CAFE,
walls covered with decades of top-40 memorabilia, rock songs blaring in the background and an all-american menu typify this music-themed restaurant. the kitchen churns out group-friendly appetizers like nachos and southern staples like barbecue ribs and chicken. burgers are served with hefty sides of fries and the signature pulled-pork sandwich is topped with vinegar barbecue sauce. the gift shop sells branded items like t-shirts, shot glasses and hats.

like moths to a flame, celebs, artists and foodies are rushing to make this eco-friendly haunt the hottest spot in culver city. Just try to get a reservation on a weekend--then ignore hollywood biggest stars as you saunter to your acid-washed copper table and hemp banquette. the ownder goes full-throttle with organic and sustainable food, wine and decor--the hot young waiters even wear organic-cotton levis. non-vegetarians will enjoy dishes like wild pepper scallops, rustic mushroom tart, and pork chops with sambazon acai.

FOXTAIL,
without a doubt, this supper club is an art deco/nouveau-style knockout with a touch of '70s glam rock thrown in for good measure. stained glass, marble tables and plush armchairs set the scene for the crowd of pimped and primped trendoids and clubbing celebutantes. while everyone else is looking over their shoulders, diners order from "top chef" Antonia Lofaso's menu of bistro fare. Selections range from generous artisanal cheese plates and roasted chicken with caramelized fennel to the nostalgic cookies and warm milk combo. once dinner is done and the lipstick has been reapplied, night owls make their way upstairs to the equally posh nightclub--that is, if they can get in.

SUSHI ON SUNSET,
from the sleek lower level sushi bar and screen-lit lounge to the upstairs dining space and gorgeous walls of floor-to-ceiling jade, the space is decidedly loungey. only instead of ambiant grooves and pretentious posturing, the soundtrack more closely resembles "the wedding singer" soundtrack, and the service is welcoming and gracious. As for what's cooking (or not) in the kitchen, master kappo chef tetsuro ahn, who comes with his own legion of raw fish followers, works his magic on buttery cuts of sashimi like the spanish mackeral and signature rolls including the rainbow, ciro and mocambo, each named after a legendary strip club.

DAN TANA'S,
aging celebs, sports legends and a group of deeply tanned babes cram into dan tana's red leather booths. charming and unpretentious despite its clientele, the tightly packed rooms swarm with high-pitched good cheer and the bustle of tuxedoed waiters. taking its cue from '50s-era red-sauce joints, the simple italian menu is loaded with garlic. entrees include italian classics like penne, spaghetti and gnocchi. for dessert, cheesecake is a perfect complement to the semi-permanent halo of garlic.
